We strive to help our patients reach their optimal health. Here are some frequently asked questions we get that can inform you to make good health decisions.

What is a subluxation?
A subluxation is a subtle misalignment of the vertebra, which interferes with the normal nerve transmission between your brain and your body. The brain controls the function of every cell, tissue, and organ in your body. The nerves are responsible for transmitting that life-giving information from the brain to each and every cell. When the vertebrae misalign, the nerve supply to the body is compromised. Very few nerves in the body are designed to send pain messages to the brain, so most subluxations do not hurt, but every one of them creates an incorrect nerve message, which interferes with your body’s ability to function at its best. Chiropractic is the art, science, and philosophy of detecting and correcting these misalignments.
What causes subluxations?
The main cause of subluxation in children is trauma. The trauma can be a difficult birth where forceps, vacuum extraction, or heavy manual traction is utilized. The trauma can be from learning to walk, falling off a bike, playing football, or any one of hundreds of bumps and falls that children experience as they grow. In adults, the primary cause of subluxation is stress. Emotional stresses put tremendous pressure on our nervous system, and can overload it to the point of subluxation. Other causes of subluxation include chemical stresses (pollutants, smoking, and drugs) and thermal stresses such as being subjected to extremes of hot and cold.
How can chiropractic help my children?
As the “interference” (i.e. stress or result of a trauma) is removed, then the body has an opportunity to heal itself. Although we do not treat diseases, the body does. A body treated with the gentle touch of chiropractic and free of interference has been shown to heal itself of ear infections, colic, Attention Deficit Disorder, asthma, sinusitis, and bedwetting. Many parents bring their children in to be checked proactively, so that they can avoid the problems that compromised nerve function can cause.
How are subluxations corrected?
The chiropractic adjustment is how the chiropractor corrects the subluxation. Many techniques are utilized for this adjustment; most are manual techniques – meaning that the chiropractor uses their hands to make the correction. Others are instrument assisted – utilizing a variety of tables and hand-held instruments to make the adjustment. Many chiropractors utilize a combination of both depending on what we judge is best for the patient.
Once a person begins chiropractic care, do they have to go forever?
Many people experience the incredible changes their body makes once their nerves begin to function at a higher level, and choose to continue those changes for the rest of their lives. Some people want to prevent the problem they had resolve under chiropractic care, and choose a maintenance schedule to accomplish that health care goal. Others wish to have the cause of their problem corrected, and choose a corrective schedule of care to resolve the subluxation complex and discontinue care once that goal is accomplished. And others choose only to have the symptom they are experiencing resolve itself, and then choose to discontinue care at that time. For every health care goal, there is a level of care to suite your personal health care goals.
Around 36 weeks pregnant I found out my baby was breach. I did several other exercises at home. I finally went to the chiropractor [Dr. Roy] and after two visits, she turned. I continued to get adjusted weekly and we had a successful vaginal birth. We are now using Compass Chiropractic for my daughter’s reflux. She had some undesirable side effects from the medicine prescribed by her pediatrician. After one visit we are already seeing improvements. We can’t wait to see what results will yield from continued treatment.
